Faulkner and Racism,
Would like to read "Half of a Yellow Sun". And, yeah, the wealth/success had to be an intentional choice, just like ignoring any current events that unfolded during the novel's timeline. I say this not from a place of snobbishness, but from one of perplexity. Reminds me a little of the pleasure I received, though, from reading "The Imperfectionists" (which, actually, was a much more perfect book). Frankly, it wore me out, reading the tome. (And, I would note, I think the TOB is a fun exercise and I follow it each year.) The first point to be made is to recognize that in the 11 years it has existed (2005-2015, not counting this year, obviously, since the Pulitzer hasn't. For example, no matter what you're opinion of A Fable, it's tough to deny it's one of Faulkner's densest pieces and is such a departure from other winners that it probably would not have gotten the prize had Faulkner not won the Nobel.
